There is no good sheltered anchorage near Burlington. This week however, the winds have been very light. Therefore we anchored near the shore with no shelter from 3 directions.
Last night our good luck ran out. The wind came up and it started blowing us toward the beach. In recent years, milfoil weed growing on the bottom has made anchor holding chancy. Anyhow, our anchor started dragging. The anchor dragging alarm woke me at 0130.
Oh well, nothing to do but move. I woke Libby, we raised anchor and moved out. Being sleepy, I wasn't in the mood to go far. We went behind the breakwater in Burlington and took a mooring. By 0230 we were back in bed again.
The moorings there are free to use during the day but you have to pay for overnight. Last time we were here they charged $.50 per foot. When I went to pay today, I got a bad surprise -- $.75 per foot. That's way overpriced for a mooring with no showers, no laundry. So it's free for the day but overpriced at night. I'd call that poorly managed.
I have to disagree; perhaps I am in a grumpy mood? Seems to me that Burlington has it exactly right on the management of maximum revenue. They get day-trippers who come and buy stuff and overnighters who don't have a choice either by their own poor planning, lack of concern, or bad weather. Sounds like they maxed out the revenue derivative very well.
ReplyDeleteSorry you got stuck. They might have had a more understanding attitude. Good on you for volunteering payment. They might have had to come by the mooring to collect from me given the emergency condidtions you faced.
Dick,
ReplyDeleteWhile down at my boat in North Cove, Old Saybrook, met a couple who's home port is Burlington and have made the reverse trek that you did out of the lake. You must have passed somewhere along the way.
I mentioned you and some of your comments on "nickle and diming" on Lake Champlain. They have noticed the increase in hassles in the last 10 years or so.
They were thrilled with the free accommodations in North Cove (up to 72 hours free. Pick up a mooring with a yellow ribbon which means the owner is away). Town dock available (formally for only 15 minutes but no hassle if someone is not waiting behind you for it), with free water. Launch service and showers from the Yacht Club for I think $9-$10 if you want it (they monitor channel 78a).
Town with shops, restaurants, banks, hardware store, 5 minute walk away. Wal-Mart, Stop and Shop, and an Amtrak station maybe 15 minute walk.
I forgot to get their name or boat name. But it's a dark green boat, maybe 24-26 feet, cabin top goes nearly to the bow with no side decks. If they run into you up there or on the way back, I told them to look out for Tarwathie.
By the way, I just got Skype myself so I may ping you since I think I saw what should be your Skype account name.
